Arginine and Heart Health
The amino acid arginine provides unique heart health benefits and pistachios are a good source of arginine like most tree nuts.
N-O for Heart Health
Preliminary evidence suggests that this amino acid may help improve conditions associated with vasodilation, such as atherosclerosis , and angina. The Harvard School of Public Health advises that nuts like pistachios have favorable effects on blood lipids, and may protect against coronary artery disease through the arginine-nitric oxide pathway.1 Arginine is a precursor of nitric oxide (NO), a potent vasodilator that can inhibit platelet aggregation and adhesion.
Unique Amino Acid
Arginine is a unique amino acid in that it is semi-essential; even though the body normally makes enough to support itself, supplementation may be needed in certain cases. For example, individuals with burns, protein malnutrition and severe infections like sepsis may require additional arginine.
Aside from its potential cardiovascular benefits, arginine may also help treat peripheral vascular disease, erectile dysfunction, and vascular headaches caused by swelling blood vessels.
